“Deep Zero” By V. S. Kemanis: Review/Giveaway

by Sandra Murphy

Details on how to win a copy of this book at the end of the review & a link to purchase it.

Dana Hargrove is the newly elected District Attorney in one of the burbs north of Manhattan. She’s good at her job, but recent events have thrown all kinds of cases her way, some that don’t have laws that exactly fit.

A teenage girl, bullied at school and on the internet, commits suicide. Laws are generally enacted after the fact so Dana’s problem is who to charge, what charges can be brought, and what punishment is suitable.

In another case, two teens are badly injured after an unsupervised party gets out of hand. What are the charges for the parents?

A man admits to killing his wife but says he has a good reason. It’s about as good as the Twinkie Defense, but will the jury buy his story?

Deep Zero is more a legal procedural than a mystery, character driven by Dana, her family, and her employees in the DA’s office. It clearly shows why charges aren’t brought against seemingly guilty people right after the crime is committed, how juries don’t always do the expected, and neither do judges.

This is the fourth book in the series. Readers will find that choices made by teens don’t always make sense but will have lasting consequences. Balancing a job and home is hard enough, but a DA also has a public life that affects the whole family. Each book can be read as a standalone or in order.
