"A Fatal Exception" By Scott Finlay: Review/Giveaway

by Lorie Lewis Ham

Details at the end of this review on how to win an ebook copy of A Fatal Exception and a link to purchase it from Amazon.

A Fatal Exception by Scott Finlay is a sci-fi mystery set in the not too distant future in a world where pollution has become unbearable, and politicians have become even more corrupt than they are now. It is also a world where androids are part of everyone’s daily life, and a huge part of the work force. However, they are all controlled by government privacy regulations so they are never allowed to grow beyond their programming. But there is one android who has managed to avoid all of that and has become his own being. That android is named Seven Sinclair and he is a private detective. With his trench coat and fedora, and a quirky way of looking at things, Seven seems like he stepped right out of an old noir mystery novel. Only difference is that he is an android.

Seven belongs to human detective Vic Sinclair who believes in letting Seven become his own person so hasn’t wiped him like all of the other androids. Vic taught Seven all he knows about being a detective, so when a client comes in looking for Vic, Seven takes on the case. The client is Ethan Willis who is the owner of a small start up who has been hacked and his entire fortune stolen. Seven sets out to investigate and ends up being framed for murder.

Sergeant Antonio Rizzo sets out to solve the murder, and catch Seven, whom he believes is the killer. Rizzo is an old-fashioned honest cop who hates technology, and to him, the android stands for everything that he hates in the world. Seven has to find the real killer, while at the same time dodging Rizzo.

A Fatal Exception is a very interesting mystery filled with twists and turns that keep you guessing. The extra twist at the end I never saw coming. Seven is a delightful, unique, sarcastic, and refreshing character who is a mix of the innocence of being an android and not having experienced everything a human would have, but also being a smart and savvy detective. Rizzo is a perfect contrast to Seven and the scenes between them are great.

If you are looking for a mystery that is different, and yet still contains all that you would expect from a great mystery detective novel, don’t miss A Fatal Exception. It is a brilliant mix of noir and sci-fi. This is the first in a series and I can’t wait for the next book!
