Mystery with a Funny Bone

Rereleased with Gemma Halliday Publishing in March, 2018, Erin Huss gives cozy fans a “klutzy, twenty-something, single mom.” Starting with French Vanilla & Felonies (Original titled For Rent), Cambria Clyne accepts a job as manager of an 40-unit LA apartment complex, and along with a home for her and her daughter and a steady income, hoping her bad luck may be on its way out. Not so fast! A plethora of quirky residents, the discovery of a dead body, and evidence of a crime spree entangles Cambria in unwelcomed drama. In Rocky Road & Revenge (June, 2018) Cambria and her daughter are settling in well, so, fingers crossed, no drama with her upcoming birthday. But BFF Amy becomes a person of interest when stars of the show she's employed with start turning up dead. A delightful prequel Strawberry Swirl & Suspicion (Originally titled For Hire) is part of Gemma Halliday Publishing’s Pushing Up Daisies short story collection (2018). earns 5/5 Tango Twists…Clever and Entertaining!

Cambria and several residents are enjoying their friend Amy’s participation in Celebrity Tango, but emergencies have ruined the evening. Caller One is yelling about a major water link raining down from her ceiling, but she is not a resident. She lives in up-scale complex next door, so Cambria reminds her to contact her own manager Violet Pumpkin. But Violet is not answering her phone! Caller Two is scared about a burglar on her patio…now on the roof! Then there's a 9-1-1 call, police, ambulance, and a crazy, but odd misunderstanding. Caller One, again! The ceiling is…crash! Violet is still MIA, and since she turns out to be the upstairs apartment, Cambria goes to check it out. Violet’s apartment. Door unlocked. Purse and phone on counter. Tub overflowing. Blood on the window sill. Violet is missing! But, Cambria discovers to others her friend may not have been so friendly.

There is so much to love about this series, and starting with the third book was fine for this newbie. Erin Huss has a delightful writing style, well-paced, and accented by clever, snarky, or “just a nice giggle” little phrases introducing each chapter. She created quite the eclectic group of residents in this complex that would try anyone’s patience, but they rely on each other like family. There are two handsome men with their eye on her adding some romantic entanglement. With a delightful first-person narrative sharing Cambria’s inner thought, Erin includes a witty banter and vivid descriptions. Despite some flaws and worries, Cambria has an admirable inner strength, clever repartee, and great mothering instincts she applies to more than her three-year-old daughter. Fun. I high recommend this series, and starting with Double Fudge & Danger is a great place to start.
