Readers of any of the previous seven entries of this incredible small-town Texas police mystery series will know Loretta Singletary as the woman-of-a-certain-age who brings meals to neighbor Samuel Craddock while engaging in almost-flirtatious banter. They never moved past the friend stage, but the Jarrett Creek Police Chief is caught completely off-guard when Loretta unexpectedly goes out of town, and he discovers why. It seems that she signed up for a Fifty and Beyond dating website, and an attractive candidate had Loretta getting a makeover and youthful new look. Unfortunately, her suitor may be just a little too good to be true, as Loretta remains missing after her out-of-town date, and it’s a pattern followed by several other women.

As Craddock finds himself completely baffled by the online dating scene, he is faced with tracking down daters who may be completely deceptive, but not criminals. His town of Jarrett Creek is having its own growing concern with a battle between the Catholic and Baptist Churches, one being waged over control of a goat rodeo. The very practical Craddock can’t work up a lot of concern over what he considers a trivial matter, but when the marriages and reputations of local women are being placed in jeopardy, he’s left with no choice but to delve in the less godly aspects of the church.

Craddock’s confusion and disbelief over online dating etiquette is an absolute delight to observe, especially when his contemporaries are so nuanced at understanding the tricks and trade of swiping right. As humorous as the novel may be, it still empathetically portrays the hopeful daters who have grown tired of a lonely life. Craddock is infuriated by those who take advantage of and prey on the vulnerable, and his sense of justice will have readers cheering for his success. Characters are vividly described, with their unique personalities made entirely realistic and fully formed. This series continues to remain strong as Craddock battles tight budgets, family rivalries, and condescending officials. Struggling to recover after financial downturns, the town of Jarrett Creek hides more than its share of criminal activities even though everyone seems to know everyone else. While this may exhaust and exasperate Craddock, it ensures that readers will look forward to seeing him continue fight for justice and protect the town he loves.
