From Spy to Scout Leader
What do you do when the Vice President of the United States "outs" you as a spy? You escape to Who's There, Iowa, and keep a low profile by becoming a Girl Scout leader for a bunch of precocious pre-teens. Daughter of a U.S. Senator Merry Wrath (code name) had been a successful deep cover CIA agent taking down terrorists, spies, and just plain evil doers, but for her safety, her career path made a left turn pushing her into an early retirement and hiding in Iowa. Her low profile didn't always work with some former nemeses bent on exacting revenge. But, worry? Not much. She has well-developed survival skills and a troop of pre-teens to challenge any would-be assassin.

Mystery Night Murder earns 5/5 Mini Lops...Clever, Engaging, & a Few Giggles!

It's a delightful fundraiser idea for the Girl Scout Council, a mystery murder game with an Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None twist: a private island in the middle of a lake, a mansion with its own murderous history, and forty-eight hours to uncover the fake "killer." Ok, what could possibly go wrong?! Merry and four of her more precocious scouts are helping make arrangements and posing as cast members to treat some of the special donors, but Merry's personal nemesis is also in attendance along with a disinterested rich guy, a well-known criminal attorney and his doting wife, a renowned surgeon, septuagenarian philanthropist couple, full-of-herself CEO, a bored tech billionaire, and a cook and a groundskeeper who have better things to do. What a gang! But, the wrong person ends up dead (really dead), a storm knocks out communications and chances for help from the mainland, and one of the figurines marking the guests is mangled. But, it doesn't stop there...Agatha Christie would be so proud!

I love Merry Wrath! Leslie Langtry's mystery is very engaging with more than a few suspects with motive, opportunity, and means to turn this supposedly fun weekend into a real twenty-five-to-life felony. I enjoy her entertaining writing style which includes vivid descriptions of the setting, characters, food, and crime scenes, fun and informative dialogue illustrating personality and emotion, and my favorite...pure snarky Merry! Beyond a very clever multi-victim murder mystery mimicking one of my favorite Christie novels, Langtry also adds some of the fun in the game Clue. But, it's the delightful characters that make this a personal favorite and kept me turning the page. Using a first-person narrative (my favorite perspective) sharing Merry's inner thoughts, she also incorporates many of her experiences, often dangers, as a spy and snarky interpretations that leave the reader giggling. Entertaining. Clever. Just the right amount of humor.
