If you like family drama, mystery, and romance, then you will like The Stories You Tell by Kristen Lepionka. This is the third book in the Roxane Weary series. Roxane, a private detective, gets a phone call from her brother Andrew late at night about a girl named Addison he had a fling with. She showed up at his apartment late at night and then quickly vanished. After the disappearance, unfortunately, Andrew is the main suspect. Roxane must work diligently to prove her brother’s innocence.

Although this is the third book in the series, it is pretty easy to understand what is going on even if you have not read the first two. The relationships are spelled out for you as well as what kind of person Roxane is: a loner with drinking issues who misses her deceased father. The characters are fun and complicated, but it is the mystery in these books which truly intrigues me. There are so many twists and turns that no one will ever see coming. I was on the edge of my seat the entire book. The plot is unpredictable and complex which all a person can hope for when reading a murder mystery. I hate mysteries that make things obvious. This book does a great job at keeping you guessing.

Roxane, however, does get on my nerves sometimes during the book. A character does not have to be perfect, obviously, but I do feel that she has not grown that much as a person since the first book, but hopefully, that will change in the books to come. I do, however, love her relationship with her dad’s former partner. It is sweet and has just enough drama to keep me interested. So many mysteries add romance with drama-filled relationships to match the drama of the mystery, but this book does a great job at a balance between sweet and dramatic.

If you love mysteries with heart and a twist on every corner, I highly suggest The Stories You Tell as well as the other books in the Roxane Weary series: The Last Place You Look and What You Want to See.
