In 1790s Maine, weaver Will Rees is called upon to help in the search for a young woman who is a midwife. She has been missing since her last delivery up on the mountain. As Will and the other men in the community spread out in different directions, they are forced to battle the icy cold and an impending snow storm.

Will takes his horse and wagon to where the young woman's buggy had been found. Starting from there Will is able to backtrack and finds that someone had forced her off the road and had apparently taken the girl. As he widens his search Will hears a voice calling for help and discovers the young woman stumbling thru the forest with no coat or shoes. He is able to get her to his home where his wife takes over getting the young woman fed and warmed up. Her story is that she was abducted and made to care for an elderly woman while cooking and cleaning for the woman's husband and two sons. Will, however, thinks she isn't telling all of the story and when his young daughter is almost abducted by two young men, Will knows something isn't right and persuades the young woman's uncle, the local sheriff, to help him figure it all out.

In the meantime, the young woman is hidden in the local Shaker community until an elderly Shaker Sister is murdered. Then her mother's house is broken into, and the family makes plans to take her out of town to relatives in Quebec. Will continues to investigate the people up on the mountain. It almost costs him his life, but he still carries on. Can he get the whole story and truth before someone else is abducted or murdered?

This was a fast moving and intense read. The descriptions of the weather and terrain really add to the story. Will is a man who is driven to care for his family in a time when life was rough. The characters all leap off the page, and the intertwined mysteries will keep you guessing to the very end. I highly recommend this book and series to any historical or mystery fan.
