Rattie Ratz Rescue: Rats, But Make it Fashion

by Alyssa Nader

Alyssa Nader is a volunteer with Rattie Ratz Rescue in the bay area of California. Each month KRL will be featuring at least one animal rescue adventure story, and every other month there will be one from Rattie Ratz.

Working with a rat rescue, you have the usual activities: adoptions, fostering, showing animals at pet fairs, intake, paperwork. Every once in a while, you get a really fun and unusual request.

Sophia of Phia Photography reached out seeking a rat for a fashion shoot with a model. We take the utmost care with our rats for their safety, so what Sophia said next helped us to know that her heart was in the right place. She explained that she was also a rat lover who had the animals growing up, and that the shoot had a special meaning for her. “I grew up with many rats but unfortunately never got to shoot them before the passed away. I’m hoping to find a way to incorporate them into my art. Happy to share information about the rescue and help out how I can!”

Despite her busy schedule, Eunice, who you heard about previously on KRLM, was available for the photoshoot. She is older (around 2 years old), so she was a good candidate for photos since she’s calmed down quite a bit in her old age.

We arranged the pick-up and Eunice was ready for her close up. Sophia picked her up from San Francisco in her travel cage and they headed up to Marin for the shoot.

Sophia said that Eunice was “a natural” and “the sweetest thing.” She sent me progress pictures of the shoot and said that Eunice was doing great, other than chewing up a bag that got too close to her cage (a rattie classic move!). If you ever want a cool, fashion distressed effect on any of your clothes, simply leave them where your rat can pull them into their cage. They will be full of holes in no time at all. And you will look super cool. #ratsbutmakeitfashion

After a couple of weeks, the results of the shoot were ready. I was ecstatic to see my little rattie, adopted from Rattie Ratz, adopted to such an artistic medium of expression. If you’ve ever tried to photograph a rat, you already know that Sophia is a true master for capturing some of these poses; it’s an art and a science! Sophia was very sweet in including a few solo portraits of Eunice as well.

Sophia and Alexis shouted out Eunice and Rattie Ratz in their editorial, Dance with the Devil.

“Alexis & I were on a hunt for a rat. Growing up with pet rats, incorporating them into my art was only to be expected. I was ecstatic to learn that Alexis & I both shared a love for rodents. After a few weeks of searching we were connected with Eunice, an incredibly sweet rat. From there, our Halloween-inspired set was born.

Rats sometimes have a bad rep but they actually make great pets. You can check out Rattie Rats in Northern California if you are interested in adopting, volunteering or learning.”

It was wonderful to connect with fellow rat lovers who are doing creative things in the world. Seeing rats’ unique beauty showcased in a new setting was awesome for us, and will open the minds of many people who likely have a lot of preconceived notions about rats.

If you have a creative project, don’t hesitate to reach out! We’d love to work with you.

Rattie Ratz is an all-volunteer organization whose mission is to help all domesticated ratties who come to us find a loving, forever home.
