Details on how to win a copy of this book at the end of the review and a link to purchase it.

After working on a Joint Terrorism Task Force with the FBI for several years, Kimo Kanapa’aka expected to return to his former position as a detective within the Honolulu Police Department. Unfortunately, when all of the preferred assignments are filled, both his lieutenant and Kimo decide that this is the ideal time for him to take time off while considering his options. Kimo’s mother has different plans in mind for him, though, and asks Kimo to do a favor for her friend. Noelani Kahale is adamant that her son Ikaika turned his life around after prison, and that his arrest for manslaughter is in actuality a case of self-defense. It doesn’t take long for Kimo to discover that the charges against the Surf City Crazy Bar bouncer leave out the fact that the victim Brian Yang was an HPD officer, whose records have been erased from official HPD databases.

Reaching out to his connections within both the police and the FBI, Kimo learns that the evidence doesn’t match the charges facing the ex-con who found redemption through the practice and study of hula. Kimo also discovers that Brian seemed to have been conducting an off-the-books investigation of his own, leading Kimo to the town of Waimanalo on the South-Eastern side of Oahu. Using all the resources available to a local boy on an island that somehow seems smaller and connected than it is, Kimo learns that the most beautiful aspects of the island can be used to cover the ugliest of crimes.

This twelfth in the series finds Kimo at the crossroads of his life, both personally and professionally. Not only is he facing the decision about whether or not to return to his position at HPD, he also is discovering the unexpected joys of fatherhood. Both he and his firefighter husband donated sperm to Sandra Guarino and Cathy Selkirk, and the four now are co-parenting the resulting adorable twins. A potential move by the mothers would impact all of their lives, especially just as Kimo and Mike have grown so attached to their babies. Kimo is realizing that he has unexpectedly grown to love this settled married life, and that he definitely doesn’t miss the single life. This series continues to explore Kimo’s growth as an openly out police officer, and while attitudes have changed since he first came out, prejudices still remain. All of Oahu’s unique and diverse cultures shine through as well, from the pidgin dialects to the blends of local cuisine. Readers will enjoy this exciting investigation within the Aloha State that highlights the growth of a fascinating and charming island hero.
