Prior Bad Acts by D.P. Lyle is the second book in the Cain/Harper Thriller series. When drug kingpin Dalton Southwell kills a rogue dealer and his family, Dalton’s brother Dennie is injured. He kidnaps Dr. Buck Buckner from the local emergency room and flees into the Tennessee hills. Bobby Cain and Harper McCoy are called in to rescue Dr. Buckner before it is too late. This fast-paced thriller delivers an edge as Cain is fighting off his own demons.

Cain and McCoy are compelling lead characters, especially with a gypsy upbringing for a back story. They are now focused on trying to right wrongs. It is an extremely sparse, fast-paced novel with a well-devised plot that reaches a satisfying conclusion. I would recommend it for those who are partial to hard-boiled detective novels, with a nod to police procedurals. There is some graphic violence and mentions of rapes.
Once started it is hard to put down. This was the first book in the series that I read, but it probably won’t be my last.
