After a literal bumpy start for their trip from British Columbia to Arizona, Welsh Canadian Cait Morgan and her husband Bud Anderson are ready to enjoy visits to the natural attractions as well as the grandeur of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West. As thanks for saving the life of the daughter of celebrity rocker Sammy Soul, Cait and Bud have been invited to be the guests of honor for Serenity’s new restaurant’s opening. As excited as they are to see Serenity, they are less enthused about where they will be staying. The restaurant is part of The Desert Gem, a new luxury resort and branch of the Faceting for Life movement, and Bud worries about attempts to convert them to their cult-like ways. The uncomfortably minute-long bonding hugs are off-putting for the retired homicide detective and criminal psychology professor, and that’s before they hear the news that one of their members is missing while his mother lays dead in another room.

This twelfth in the series continues to deliver a compelling mystery led by an engaging and very grounded married couple. While this is not a first marriage for either partner, Bud and Cait embrace calling one another “Wife” and “Husband” in a way that is neither eye-rolling nor sugary-sweet. Their careers in criminology have them all too aware of the people’s darkness, but they have the intelligence, experience, and Cait’s eidetic memory to help them unravel the most complicated puzzles. The exploration of the Faceting for Life moment reveals how even the best of intentions can be manipulated into a greedy and profit-seeking venture. It shouldn’t be surprising that the fourteen Facets that lead to enlightenment are achieved through the purchase of expensive books, seminars, and cruises. Bud and Cait are an engaging couple and extremely competent pair of investigators, and hopefully their next adventurous getaway proves to be as exciting, dryly funny, and thoughtful.
