Settings And Changing Plans

By TG Wolff

I suppose every author has a different reason for where they set their books. For my Diamond mystery series, I crossed a whodunnit with the international travel of a thriller. When it came to what countries Diamond should go to, the decision was easy. . .  she went where I went. The first book, Widow’s Run, had Diamond going to Italy. She chased through the streets of Rome, Italy and raced through the Tuscan countryside at a pace far faster than my own. In Suicide Squeeze, Diamond rocked Scotland. She went to all my favorite places: Edinburgh Castle, City of Inverness, the tiny but totally cute town of Fort Augustus, Urquhart Castle (which was blown up long before Diamond got there) and, of course, Loch Ness. I really liked Scotland. Diamond’s grand finale was planned to follow our most recent European destination – France. She was to attend a convention of therapists in Provence where she was going to get into so much delicious trouble.

That’s where I ran into a problem.

A little bug stopped the world just as I was SUPPOSED to be traveling and writing.

So instead of Diamond following me, I followed her. In Psycho Therapy, she went to a resort in Aix-en-Provence, France, where she toured the country, ate delicious food, found a dead body or two, and had an epic confrontation with a killer. While she was being edited, I went to Aix-en-Provence. I stayed at a lovely (but much smaller) resort with my family, spent time in the amazing town, visited Marseille, and several wonderful small towns.

When I returned home, I edited the book to add real sights, sounds, and flavors into what I imagined. Not the way I planned to write the book, but what are you going to do? We all got tossed a lemon. I made mine into a tarte au citron (French lemon tart.)

I’ve provided links to the places Diamond and I visited. All of her mysteries are available through online retailers and upon request from your local bookseller. The final leg adventure, Psycho Therapy, was released in July from Down & Out Books.
