Maeve leaves her small town, Hampton Beach, New Hampshire, for a foray to New York where she developed a career in event planning and became engaged to Greyson, the famous news correspondent, on a nationally broadcast morning show. After she quit her job and moved in with Greyson, the romance came to a screeching halt. Greyson was photographed in a car accident with a local starlet and Maeve left him and everything she owned to go home to mom’s and lick her wounds.

Coming out of a five-day hibernation, Maeve meets up with a best friend, Paige, and a former boyfriend, Finn. Relationships she had before leaving for New York that had gone cold begin to simmer. Paige teaches voice lessons at The Music Box, owned by Maeve’s mother. The two girls find one of Paige’s students, Trixie Bell, in the dumpster covered in glitter and very dead. Trixie is a local social media influencer who has offended nearly everyone in town, which points to plenty of suspects.

Maeve decides to investigate. What else does she have to do? Sometimes the police detective on the case find it helpful, but, mostly, it just puts Maeve in the crosshairs. The story becomes a roller coaster ride for Maeve and the reader. She picks up a stalker, a new-old boyfriend, and a full-time job at the Music Box, all while just trying to stay alive. Things quickly build when Paige becomes a suspect, the local gossips start rumors of affairs, and general sour notes are all over what Maeve thought was her sleepy hometown.

This book crescendos to an unexpected end with a captured killer, a new love for Maeve, and a business boom for the Music Box. You’re sure to enjoy Jill Piscitto’s other title as well: Tinsel and Tea Cakes.
