When I read in the publisher blurb that The Village Library Demon-Hunting Society, a new mystery/fantasy, was a “mix of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Murder, She Wrote” I immediately put it at the top of my to-be-read stack.

Sherry Pinkwhistle is the official head librarian in her village of Winesap, as well as the village’s unofficial amateur sleuth. As the book begins, readers discover that Sherry has solved numerous murders in the community. Some reviewers felt as if they were dropped into the middle of a series, but this isn’t a complaint I have. I enjoyed that I was immediately into the story and got a solid idea of Sherry as a character.

Unfortunately, a murder happens that hits close to her heart, and Sherry can’t bring herself to investigate. The reactions of community members to Sherry’s refusal to investigate is beyond intense and seems almost other-worldly. It scares Sherry, and what scares her even more is that the folks with those intense reactions don’t seem to remember having them. It is then that Sherry begins to think that whatever is causing these deaths is unnatural. And then Sherry’s cat, Lord Thomas Cromwell, becomes possessed by what seems to be an ancient demon.

Is Sherry losing her mind, or is something demonic happening in her small village? Never one to shy away from a challenge, Sherry enlists the help of the town’s new young priest and a few friends. The group calls themselves the Demon-Hunting Society, and they must work together to solve the most recent murder and, most importantly, rid the village of a demon.

This was an absolute crazy delight to read. The writing is clever and blends humor, fantasy, and cozy mystery together skillfully. I adore Sherry and her crew of demon hunters. They are so vividly drawn that I found myself wanting to join their team, even though I really have no desire to fight a demon! I could easily visualize the village of Winesap in the falling snow––the contrast of a totally normal, delightfully cozy town and demons was just perfect.

While not technically set in the fall, this makes wonderful fall not-too-spooky-but-kind-of-creepy reading. Sometimes when a book is compared to another book, show, or movie, I get my hopes up and am later disappointed because I find the comparison lacking. The comparison of this book to a combination Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Murder, She Wrote, however, was spot on. I enjoyed every creative page.
