Jade is attending the funeral for a friend and local art collector, Benji Thompson, who recently passed away from an accident…or so everyone thinks. At the funeral, Jade is approached by Hilda Bauer, who is on the search for a family heirloom (a brooch) that was lost during World War II. Benji had been helping Hilda before his death and surprisingly leaves a cryptogram along with a message for Hilda to give to Jade in the event of his passing.

As Jade begins to decipher the cryptogram and hunt for the brooch, she is pulled into a journey full of suspenseful clues. And she’s pretty sure Benji’s death was no accident.

Wow! The plot summary for this mystery states that Jade is pulled into a labyrinth of secrets” and that is the perfect description. Jade’s hunt for the brooch and for the truth pull her into an international art theft ring, with secrets and clues spilling off each page. I was quickly turning the pages as I attempted to put it all together. I did not guess the big reveal at the end, and it was an excellent one.

What I especially enjoyed about this book are the bits of well placed humor throughout. They were most welcome and added a lot of fun to a mystery full of twists. Even right after the big reveal, I had a big smile on my face when I saw which character showed up to help Jade.

I love reading a story featuring a strong female lead, and Jade was just that. She was determined to right wrongs and seek truth, all with a great sense of humor. I also enjoyed her close relationship with her family, especially with her dad, who really is a great dad character.”

Jade is surrounded by an eclectic cast of side characters, and because she kept uncovering clues, I found myself side-eying the characters, hoping I knew which ones Jade could trust!

The detailed descriptions of the settings around town (I especially loved one character’s office with a built-in coffee bar!) and the information about art theft brought the story to life.

Fans of fast paced mysteries full of murder, cryptic clues and drama should love this latest from Terry.
