It’s March, 1939. Nate Ross is a PI chasing down a small-time caper carried out by the ticket-seller girl in the movie box office and her accomplice, the usher. It’s a day’s work to watch them thinking they’ll get away with it. The surprise for Nate is the theater’s owner doesn’t want them arrested.

After the last show, Nate follows the usher to a local bar and finds a bigger surprise. The usher is meeting a former cop, a man Nate helped send to prison. Who knew he was out and what’s his involvement with a two-bit thief?

When the pair takes their heated discussion to the alley and the usher ends up dead, who can an ex-cop turn to in order to clear his name? Not the police, that’s for sure. With the ex-cop on the run, two assassins and mobsters after him, a scam bigger than Nate ever imagined, threats against the box office girl, and bodies dropping left and right, Nate’s not sure who to trust, especially his ex-cop ex-friend.

This is the second book in the series. Nate is an honest man, a good investigator, and willing to take a chance on an old friend, even if it’s a long shot. Each step he takes moves him closer to the Big Score and into more danger. Aggie, Nate’s contact at the newspaper, is the perfect hardworking woman, determined to succeed in a man’s world. Every detail is tied up in the only possible and unexpected way.

If you’re a fan of gats and gams, dames and dirty cops, mobsters and mayhem, this is the book for you. The language is spot on, and the atmosphere, too, giving you the feeling you could go start up your Studebaker, stop by the drive in, and order a tasty sandwich, a slice of fresh-baked pie, and a beer, and have it brought right to your car by a smiling girl in a gaucho hat and slacks. It’s that kind of story.

It's also the kind that will show up on my Best of 2022 list. I’m hoping there’s a third book, and more after that.
