Crime Writers of Color Coming Attractions July-September of 2023

 “No one benefits from ignorance.”

— Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, dissenting Students for Fair Admissions v. University of North Carolina

The Supreme Court’s recent landmark decision addressing affirmative action roundly dismisses the value of promoting racial diversity in higher education. Chief Justice Roberts had earlier advised, “The way to stop discrimination on the basis of race is to stop discriminating on the basis of race.” A chilling statement, facile in its oversimplification.

The effects of this misguided ruling are certain to tug at the fabric of U.S. society, unraveling the fragile and fraught tapestry that this country has struggled to weave together for centuries. And beyond college campuses, the Court’s door-slam to diversity will echo across businesses, nonprofits, and even the arts. Against this backdrop, groups like Crime Writers of Color offer a critical counterpoint.

While the Supreme Court may overlook the importance of inclusive representation, Crime Writers of Color emphasizes its value, underscoring that people from all races, cultures, and backgrounds, especially those traditionally marginalized, are present and proud. Dismissing these underrepresented voices comes at the peril of the ignorant.
