Setting the scene for Double Scoop of Murder: Danika Delany has recently returned to the small, coastal Long Island town where she grew up. She’s transitioning her retired uncle’s old-fashioned ice cream parlor into a trendier cafe with ice cream, and she lives above the shop in the quaint town center.

Uncle Jimmie is still game to help Dani out, and shows up with his crony Harry whenever she needs him. In addition, Dani’s posse includes gorgeous sister Meghan, best friend Gwen, and young part-time employee and tech-genius Elijah. Dani also has two potential love interests: tall, dark, and handsome detective Jake who is new to town; and high school boyfriend Luca who is now a firefighter––and we all know what that says about his attractiveness.

In this third installment of the Coffee & Cream CafĂ© Mysteries, the town is all agog about a treasure hunt. A local billionaire recluse has just died and left his fortune to…whoever wins the treasure hunt. The billionaire’s two adult sons (each problematic in their own way) are also forced to compete for what they believe to be their rightful inheritance.

Shortly after the billionaire’s trusted aide publicly announces the rules of the contest––and claims he doesn’t know where the treasure is buried––the aide himself is dug up, dead. Add to the mix a beautiful influencer, an online video golden boy, a sparring elderly couple who live in a trailer, and the list of suspects is complete. The chase is on!

I have to confess that halfway through this book I panicked because the book was roaring by so enjoyably fast that I didn’t want it to end. Author Lena Gregory has really hit her stride here, with characters and their relationships gelling beautifully.

While traveling the world and writing about wine and spirits, Becky Sue Epstein read cozy mysteries to relax. One day it occurred to her that she could combine the two pursuits. She recently began to write wine-themed cozy mysteries. Hopefully, her agent will love them.
