One of the things I liked most about this book was that the writing mirrors the main character: naïve and bursting with energy. In this story, twenty-something Ruby has recently moved from her native Georgia all the way to Hawaii to pursue her childhood dream of becoming a hula girl. We, as readers, are caught up and swept along on the ups and downs she experiences in her quest.Image Source Gemma Halliday |
Is Ruby simply too inexperienced and trusting? Or is something else going on? These uncertainties lead Ruby to question other things in her new life in Hawaii, even the seemingly authentic help of the local man she is attracted to. He runs a smoothie shop, and by the end of the book, if you’re anything like me, you’ll be craving that daily smoothie the way Ruby does.
One day, Ruby encounters a character who seemed strangely familiar to me. When I looked into it, I found that I had met that character before. Several authors write about Aloha Lagoon, the cute, fictional Kauai resort town which has “a slightly higher than normal murder rate.” Griggs is one of the authors. Each author has created a different main character, and characters from one author occasionally encounter characters of the other authors––a clever concept. It was fun to meet up with a character I’d read about in another Aloha Lagoon book, and see the resort town from a different point of view.

One day it occurred to her that she could combine the two pursuits. She recently began to write wine-themed cozy mysteries. Hopefully, her agent will love them.
I like Hawaiian mysteries!
