It’s appropriate that an actual practicing Wiccan is hosting Buttercup, Texas’s first ever Halloween Witches’ Ball. Seraphine and her sister Aimee Alexandre are the owners of the Honeyed Moon Mead Winery, where guests will celebrate as benefits go to the property’s animal rescue organization. Having given up her career as a Houston investigative reporter to buy and run her grandmother’s Dewberry Farm, Lucy Resnick is protective of Buttercup, a friendly town that feels less friendly with the opening of an exotic game hunting ranch. Aimee’s tarot reading that pulls up the Death card proves to be literal when the ranch’s owner Bug Wharton drops dead. Initial signs point to an allergic attack and failed EpiPen, but the collapse occurring just after Seraphine berates him and he drinks her wine casts suspicion on it being an accidental death. Since Sheriff Rooster Kocurek has a reputation for laziness and not looking beyond the obvious, Lucy worries for the fate of the Wiccan sisters.

It’s not as though Lucy doesn’t already have enough to do, as the well has literally run dry on Dewberry Farm and she is scrambling to find a way to get water to her crops and animal family. As Lucy worries about the rising costs of the potential disaster, a chupacabra is apparently rampaging through Buttercup taking out livestock. The latter would seem entirely implausible if not for the eerie noises and rumored haunting of the old Ulrich home, a hundred-year-old building that Lucy salvaged and had moved to her farm. Solving an old crime will have to take a backseat to the present one, as Seraphine soon sits in a cell and an irritable Aimee refuses to disclose her own secrets.

While there are multiple mysteries and plots ensuing throughout the novel, both the author and Lucy skillfully juggle them all without losing track or interest. Lucy’s romance with veterinarian Tobias Brandt gives her a unique perspective into the dilemma of humanely treating animals doomed to be hunted. The mystery of Bug Wharton becomes more complex with the involvement of his brother, but the thoroughly entertaining Buttercup locals ensure for good-natured fun and joviality.

The highlights of this novel are the unexpected needs and rewards of a working farm, with its many working parts that depend on one another for success. This is a town where neighbors barter goods and services and provide help before being asked, making it an enviable place to live for those accustomed to hectic city life. The author of the Gray Whale Inn mysteries delivers yet another atmospheric mystery full of surprises, autumn treats, and emotionally satisfying moments.
