With just a week to go before Valentine’s Day, Lacy Marie Crocker is far more concerned with designing cupid wings for pets than finding her own romantic date. After all, it was a cheating ex-fiancé that had her returning to New Orleans’s Garden district, despite over a decade of doing everything possible to distance herself from her family’s wealth and legacy. No one is more surprised than Lacy to discover that she has enjoyed the past year being back home, running the pet boutique and organic treat bakery the Furry Godmother. Lacy and her elegant mother may still butt heads, but the one stalwart presence in both their lives has always been Lacy’s veterinarian father. So when he becomes implicated in the murder of a friend, even Violet Conti-Crocker will support her daughter’s investigation.

Wallace Becker, owner of an event hall as well as the Cuddle Buddies pet-sitting business, somehow managed to die after being locked in the hall’s walk-in deep freezer. Gossip quickly identifies Dr. Croker as the probable murderer, and after Mrs. Conti-Crocker’s funeral casserole is rejected, Lacy is spurred on to prove her father’s innocence. On her side is the attorney Chance Hawthorne who was her high school crush and the brother-in-law of her best friend, while uncomfortably on the other is the much quieter—but equally attractive—Detective Jack Oliver. Following a trail of shameful secrets, pet nannies, and illicit trysts, Lacy finds herself threatened, attacked, and on the receiving end of a restraining order. It makes being forced to sit on the National Pet Pageant Welcoming Committee with her mother seem appealing, although Lacy will have to balance her responsibilities with designing guinea pig Easter costumes and bonnets for llamas.

This is a relentlessly entertaining mystery that never becomes too cute as it explores the deep-rooted New Orleans’s culture and regard for families. It is that attachment that has Lacy so reluctant to pursue a relationship with Chance, as their families’ overwhelming approval means that a possible breakup would be devastating for everyone. Lacy may be an oversharer who leads with her heart, but she is protective of her relationships. The chickens come home to roost when Lacy is repeatedly reminded how her rebellious teen years (she really only wanted to annoy her mother) established the town’s opinion of her, but she is moving past that as she becomes a responsible adult. An investigation with Jake’s own family continues to be threaded throughout this third in the series, adding another layer of intrigue to an already compelling puzzle. A delightful mystery full of pet recipes and the adoration of furry companions, it is a standout when highlighting the strength and resilience of New Orleans.
