Hair salon owner Marla Vail’s New Year is off to a horrific start when she receives the news that her best friend and her husband have gone missing. It only gets worse when the couple’s car is eventually found, leaving Ken Riggs dead and Tally in a coma. The only relief was that their four-month-old baby Luke had been left at home with a sitter, but Marla isn’t so sure she’s ready to take over as his full-time caregiver. It’s a tough juggling act, mourning the fate of her friends while trying to delve into the complicated legal and financial documentations involved, but Marla knows that Tally would do the same. Or at least Marla thought Tally would, as the deeper the investigation into the crash goes the less certain Marla is that she knew everything about her best friends.

Marla’s husband, Palm Haven homicide detective Dalton Vail, is on the sideline of the investigation, but she fears that the longer the case goes unsolved the more the risk to Tally and her baby. Ken’s insurance company had become involved in some shady ventures, and he may not have been the only victim of greedy schemes. Given access to their home, Marla has the difficult task of investigating her friends’ personal and business lives, with the dilemma of feeling as though she is breaching their privacy. Adding to the burden is Marla’s greatest fear, that of motherhood and failing to protect a child. The newly married Marla was already feeling the pressure of well-meaning friends and family asking about her plans for a future, and caring for a newborn only increases it.
This fourteenth in the Bad Hair Day series takes a darker turn, as it confronts a horror no one wants to consider. Who takes care of a child if both parents are gone, and who is prepared to actually have to assume that responsibility? Marla’s hair salon takes a backseat to the priority of caring for an infant, not to mention determining who may have wanted either of little Luke’s parents dead. The tone maintains its lightness as it delves into Florida society and its rather unique population. It is a joy for readers of this series to see Marla lower her guard as she opens her heart to the infant, even as she knows that she may ultimately have to give him up. Marla and Dalton have a loving marriage full of respect, as he has finally given in to her need to investigate and find justice for those she loves. Seeing Marla grow and mature is a rewarding experience in itself, but readers have much to look forward to as she enters the next phase in her entertaining and promising life.
