“Murder as Sticky as Jam” By Diana Orgain: Review/Giveaway

Details on how to win an ebook copy of this book at the end of the review & a link to purchase it.

Mona Reilly had planned the grand opening of her gluten-free Jammin’ Honey store to coincide with the start of the Magnolia Falls’ Memorial Day tourist season. Her dreams are dashed when a fire burns down the shop before it has a chance to open, and police discover a body in the unused warehouse. Mona had been conveniently – too conveniently – called away to consult on a recipe when the fire broke out, and her absence places her squarely in the sights of the police and town gossip. It only partially helps that her old high school crush is now the Magnolia Falls investigating police officer, as the emotions he stirs take Mona right back to her wounded, teenaged self.

Free-spirted Great Aunt Cecilia loaned Mona the funds to open her dream shop, so she feels all the more obligated to making the store a success. Adding to the pressure are the angry accusations being thrown her way by an angry and jealous cousin, not to mention those of the surviving widow. Surprisingly, it is Mona’s far more conservative, some would say tight-fisted, Great Aunt Beatrice who offers support, encouraging Mona to question her nosy neighbors in order to find the truth.

In the arc of any hero’s story there is a downfall before the uprising, and here is often painful to see Mona struggle against every consecutive blow. This reflects how sympathetic a character Mona becomes to readers, most who will relate to her insecurities, fears, and ultimately her joy. While Mona rides an emotional roller coaster regarding her own romantic aspirations, she is very protective over the progress being made by her business partner and best friend. Hopefully future installments will explore more of Mona’s reasoning for embracing a gluten-free lifestyle, as it was from her mother that she learned a love of baking. Recipes, a vulnerable and very likable heroine, and an optimistic outlook for Mona’s future ensure that her next appearance will be a fun treat.
