I am a HUGE fan of Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden series, The Dresden Files, and while I'm still a couple of books behind, I jumped at the chance to read his new collection of Dresden Files short stories, Brief Cases.

For anyone not familiar with the series, Harry Dresden is, to put it simply, a wizard detective. Books that combine mystery and fantasy are my favorite type of books, and this series is at the top of my list! Most of these stories have been published elsewhere, primarily in various anthologies, and a few did seem familiar but I was perfectly fine revisiting them. My favorite stories were those involving Big Foot, of which there were three: "B is for Bigfoot," "I Was a Teenage Bigfoot," and "Bigfoot on Campus." The one entitled "Jury Duty" was also a lot of fun, as you can probably imagine just from the title-imagine 12 Angry Men with a wizard on the jury lol. It was also interesting reading a story featuring his apprentice Molly.

Another fun one was the only story in the collection that is brand new, "Zoo Day," where Harry takes his daughter to the zoo-again you can just imagine how that would go!

This collection includes everything that I love about Harry Dresden-his wit, the interesting people who surround him, the fact that he is so much more than just some wizard doing fancy spells, his heart, and the fact that despite the magic he is a completely believable hero-he's real, he messes up sometimes. It's all wonderful and there's always an interesting mystery too. Brief Cases provides a perfect taste of all of it--leaving the reader eager to jump back into the books for more!

If you love fantasy and mystery-don't miss this series! You may not want to start with Brief Cases as it means more if you know the characters-however you can pretty much pick this book up no matter where you are in the series and still enjoy it-though beware there are a couple spoilers in some of the stories.

  2. As much as I love a good short story, all the short stories in Brief Cases should be made into Full Length Novels. I don't care if Jim Butcher doesn't eat or sleep for 5 years, I Need More Harry Dresden. (just kidding, maybe!) Great Book, very good review!
