“Claws of Death” A Cat Lady Mystery By Linda Reilly: Review/Giveaway

by Cynthia Chow

Details on how to win a copy of this book at the end of the review and a link to purchase it.

When Lara Caphart returned to Whisker Jog, New Hampshire, to help her aging aunt, Lara didn’t expect to find the historical home to be overflowing with Fran Clarkson’s many – too many – adored cats. It only made sense to transform Aunt Fran’s home into the High Cliff Shelter for Cats, and with extensive background checks and interviews the felines have slowly been taken in by affectionate families.

No one is more excited than Lara to be meeting their next prospective adopter Deanna Daltry, an Oscar and Tony nominated actress interested in feline pets as she returns to her former home. The initial meeting with cuddly kittens Noodle and Doodle goes so well that Deanna invites Lara and her aunt to a welcoming tea reception hosted by the Ladies’ Association at the historical society. It seems that not everyone in Whisker Jog is feeling in a welcoming mood, though, as Deanna has a confrontation with an uninvited guest, her purse is vandalized, and a threatening note is written on her car. Events escalate when Lara and Aunt Fran deliver the kittens to Deanna’s home only to find a very fresh corpse left on top of the family graveyard.

Police quickly identify the body as that of a retired gym teacher, but that doesn’t explain his connection to Deanna or why he was left surrounded by flowers. Wanting to ensure that the kittens will be safe in their new home, Lara begins to question what may be behind the danger surrounding the iconic actress. While Lara trusts the long memories of Whisker Jog locals, she trusts even more the instincts of her elusive cat Blue, the spectral feline who appears and disappears leaving clues and hints in his wake. Being a little too inquisitive for her own good may jeopardize more than just her health, as Lara’s continual involvement in the investigation puts her at odds with the protective attorney she has just begun dating.

Mystery and especially cat lovers will, of course, find this second in the series completely irresistible. Yet as cute and charming as the cats may be, it is the motivations behind the murder that will completely draw readers in. Few will guess the who and why of the crime, but much fun will be had along the way. It would be hard to dislike a woman so earnestly devoted to finding the best homes for vulnerable pets looking for love, and Lara’s humor and intelligence guarantees that she will have a strong following. Engaging characters, the psychic cat Blue, and the extraordinary healing power of cats are a winning combination for this enjoyable, heart-warming novel.
