Meet Agnes Odboddy! She is an eccentric widow in her 70s. During World War I she and her closest friend, Mildred Higgenbottom, were spies for the United States against Germany. Now that age has caught up with her, she has become an even more avid patriot on the west coast home front during World War II. She shares her home with her granddaughter Katherine and Katherine's nine-year-old ward, Maddie.

On a recent cross-country trip to Washington, D.C., Agnes and Katherine had rescued Maddie from the clutches of her criminally-inclined family and made themselves responsible for her upbringing. Katherine's fiancé, Dr. Don Dew-Right, isn't thrilled with the adoption and is constantly fighting with Katherine about it. Then Katherine's friend from the FBI arrives and asks her out, while Mrs. Odboddy's fling from World War I comes back into her life for the third time.

It is the fall of 1943, and Agnes is experiencing a series of mysterious events that puts her at odds with Newbury's Chief of Police Waddlemucker. She comes home to find that someone has opened her front door, let her cat out, and left a box containing a live rat on her front porch. The cat has released the rat from the box, and the two of them are in the process of destroying the contents of the house with the cat's pursuit of the rat. Then Agnes receives a distress call from Mildred to come pick her up in Wilkey's grocery store parking lot. Arriving there, Agnes finds no sign of Mildred. When she rouses Mildred from bed, Agnes realizes it was a hoax.

The next day, Chief Waddlemucker tells Agnes that the grocery store has been robbed during the night and that one of her initialed handkerchiefs was found by the counter and that a witness places her at the scene. The next incident takes place at The First Church of the Evening Star and Everlasting Light's harvest fair. Agnes pays with a five-dollar bill that proves to be counterfeit, and the town is calling her a counterfeiter. The next incident involves someone letting a tame tiger loose from its traveling home with the carnival appearing at the fair. Can Agnes, Katherine, and Chief Waddlemucker find the real culprits before Agnes has to start wearing prison stripes?

This was a delightful historical cozy mystery with some wonderfully rendered characters and setting. The mystery plot had lots of tangles and twists before the surprising ending. This is the third book in the series, and I have added the first book, Mrs. Odboddy, Hometown Patriot and the second book, Mrs. Odboddy, Undercover Courier to my reading list. Any cozy or historical mystery buff will delight in reading this series.
