“The Pint of No Return” By Ellie Alexander: Review/Giveaway

by Sandra Murhpy

Details on how to win a copy of this book at the end of the review and links to purchase it.

Sloan Krause is one of a few female brewmasters, especially in Leavenworth, Washington. She married into the Krause brewing family but is now separated from her husband Mac who instead of sampling beers, sampled a barmaid. Sloan accepted a job at a nanobrewery (smaller than a microbrewery) and loves it. Garrett treats her more like a partner than an employee and gives her free reign in the kitchen. Combining a love for food and beer is a dream job.

There are complications, of course. Mac wants her back, the elder Krauses want to work less and have arranged for the brewing company to be run by Mac, his brother Hans, and Sloan. Add in parenting a teenage son and Sloan has her hands full.

It’s Oktoberfest and that means three weekends of tourists clogging the town, drinking beer, and dancing the Chicken Dance five hundred times in a row. When a documentary crew shows up to film, it’s hard to tell if that’s a plus or not. It will draw more tourists and paying customers, but can the town really handle more? Then there’s April. She’s appointed herself in charge of all things German which means lederhosen, poofy dresses, and German accents for all. Sloan and Garrett manage to resist.

The commentator for the documentary is Mitchell Morgan, former child star, who thinks he’s an A-lister. He’s demanding, obnoxious, and otherwise forgettable. When his body is found, it’s no surprise someone wanted him dead. The suspect list is long.

In addition, a young woman shows up, claiming that Mitchell paid her way to the festival and arranged for a hotel room for her because she’s president of his fan club. Truth or lie? It’s hard to tell. Sloan feels sorry for the girl, but is her trust misplaced? After all, Sloan trusted her husband and look how that turned out.

This is the second book in the series. Sloan is a likable character, enthusiastic, knowledgeable about beer and brewing without being a showoff about it. She and Garrett work well together as friends as well as at work. The Krause family is one that would make you feel at home. Be prepared to drool at the aroma of grilling bratwurst and craft beer on tap. Jump right in and flap your arms for the Chicken Dance. Just watch out for April or you’ll be in lederhosen in no time.
