Redstone Ridge in Colorado is breathtaking, a rugged mountain wilderness. Like all beautiful places, it has its secrets and they are bound to surface. Cole Walker, the local veterinarian, is part of a wild sheep relocation program in order to protect the food supply for the herd. On a horseback ride with his kids to see the sheep, the outing is spoiled when their dog proudly shows off his discovery of a man’s boot—with the foot still inside. Officer Mattie Cobb and her partner, K-9 Robo, are called in to investigate and find a burning pit where the rest of the charred body remains. Soon, the area is covered in cops investigating who the victim was and who the killer is.

Cole assists in the search for clues on the mountainside where they witness the shooting death of an older ram. The sniper disappears, but searchers believe the ram’s killing was to distract them from the man’s body. Looking for the origin of the shot, Cole and Maddie discover depressed areas in the ground near the burning pit that contain the skeletal remains of a child and two adults.

Maddie and Cole have a personal relationship as well as a professional one. It seems to him, that every time he tries to get closer, she pulls back. He knows it’s something related to her family but doesn’t know just what it is. She’s been able to reconnect with her brother after many years apart. So far, they’ve only talked on the phone but plan to meet in person soon. In the meantime, he remembers a lot that she’s tried to forget, hard for them to discuss.

While there are a number of suspects for the current murder, it soon becomes apparent it’s connected to the three other bodies from years before. The more information they uncover, the more obvious it becomes that the deaths have a connection to Maddie.

This is the fourth book in the series. Maddie is a good friend to have. Her somewhat flawed personality helps so you won’t feel inferior, considering her many talents. The romance with Cole (and his two girls) is heart-warming. Robo is trained for search and rescue and now knows how to find evidence as well. It’s fascinating to read about how he works.

The mystery will keep readers guessing as well as turning the pages quickly to find out what happens next. Tension mount as a forest fire threatens them all. It certainly fits the thriller genre and will make readers want to rush through the first read and then go back for a more leisurely time with Cole and Maddie. This will certainly be on my Best of 2018 list of reviews.
