It’s 1936, and Lane Sanders is busier than ever at work. Her personal life is equally demanding. Lane is the personal assistant to the flamboyant Fio LaGuardia, Mayor of New York City.

When a close friend of the Mayor’s goes missing, Lane is involved with finding the man. There are few clues, but it is known that before he disappeared, he received two red envelopes—one at home and one at work. He was also seen in the company of a well-known gangster.

Personally, Lane is ready, she thinks, to face going back to her family’s home. Her parents were killed, murdered in fact, and she’s yet to discover why or who killed them. One failed attempt to go home brings a few clues, but she needs to spend time there alone to learn more.

In the city, she has formed a friendship with a homeless girl who looks out for other kids living on the streets. Although she wants to save them, it turns out they are more help than she ever imagined possible in solving the crimes.

Lane’s true love, Finn, is overseas on a mission of his own. It’s soon apparent that the mysteries in New York City are linked with his investigation.

The title references a solid gold chess piece found with dead bodies. It’s assumed the killer left the pawn to show the person was marked for murder. They were also used to intimidate people into doing what the kingpin wanted. To give more details would spoil the plot.

This is the second book in the series, The Silver Gun being the first. Lane is a delightful character: determined, smart, and still fun-loving. Her relationship with Finn is true love. The more she finds out about her past, she’s able to discover more about the present.

History is woven throughout the storyline with bits and pieces about New York City, air travel, and the common use of telegrams at the time. The plot is thick with subplots interspersed until it all comes together at the end. Keep close track of the names, there are a number of characters to follow, all with a purpose.

For a quick trip back in time, join Lane and Finn as they solve mysteries, past and present.
