Just before Yom Kippur, Rabbi Aviva Cohen is called from her congregation to attend her mother's hospital bedside in Boston. Ninety-six-year-old Beatrice Cohen was found unconscious on her bathroom floor in her independent living apartment at Alcott Senior Residence. Supposedly she banged her forehead and has a severe concussion, necessitating a medically-induced coma. When Aviva questions the treatment, the endotracheal tube and credentials of various hospital officials, the air gets rather chilly.

With the help of her sister, ex-husband, nephew, and niece, Aviva starts an investigation into what is really going on at the hospital and retirement center, as things just don't add up. Why did her mother have a huge bandage on her head, when she only bumped her forehead? What were the connections between the hospital and the retirement community? With no clear cut answers from the hospital administration, Aviva starts to push back on the facts of the accident only to find her mother's apartment ransacked, more lies from the personnel at both facilities, and too many unanswered questions.

This was a five-star read, the characters were very realistically portrayed, and the mystery plot was a maze of twisted clues and misdirection which kept me reading straight thru the book. The female Rabbi and Jewish background aspect only added depth to the book without being distracting. I also enjoyed the fact that the main characters were older. This was the third book in the series, and I have added them to my reading list. This is a read that I unhesitatingly recommend for an absorbing evenings read.
