Boxes in the Basement earns 5/5 Mysteries Galore…Intriguing Page-Turner!

What is insanity? That, they say, is the question. Running away cross country to Maine? Buying sight unseen a dilapidated Victorian? Moving to a town totally opposite of what one knows? Yes, crazy! Abby Sullivan has experienced the worst tragedy anyone can imagine, and despite a support group of family and friends she has decided for her “sanity” to take a giant leap…renovations, remodeling, and a big orange cat! But it's the murder of a local young woman that grabs her attention. She's honed her curiosity as a mystery writer and wife of a police detective, so asking questions and piecing the puzzle together comes easy.

Along with varying dramas with overseeing the renovations, buying this and that, making new friends, and settling in with Rufus, Abby’s curiosity is in overdrive. She finds some curious boxes in her basement filled with personal items and photographs that makes her believe there's more to the murder than originally thought. Like research done by a writer she starts to see connections and like outlining a novel she theorizes possible scenarios. Sharing her thoughts with her new Inn manager and cook, local police chief, and even getting help from a friend in D.C., Abby’s got this worked out.

Just what I eagerly expect from Kathi Daley! A clever mystery, wonderful characters well developed for a first-in-a-series, descriptions, banter, and plenty of “fur” friends. The mystery puts Abby on the periphery with details and connections unfolding to other mysterious deaths and disappearances. Her “mind of a writer” and experience as a sounding board is a valuable tool, and although she doesn't get in the way of the investigation, her insights are found to be helpful to the local law enforcement. It is a very realistic storyline that puts the reader right in the middle with an engaging “I” perspective. Abby is an admirable young woman readers will enjoy with a strong desire to begin a new life, and the friends she makes are all levels of fun. Great descriptions, informative and engaging banter, and a cat and dogs to round out an entertaining read.

BONUS! Kathi has added an easy-to-follow recipe for Cranberry Muffins!
