Arn is working as a range detective on a case of sheep rustling when the rustler apparently witnesses the strangulation of a young local girl. The rustler escapes with the strangler following right behind. As Arn is pulled into the strangler's world, he and Ana believe that more murders will follow the first one as the strangler follows clues to find the witness. As the case expands following a second strangulation, Arn and Ana find that there are more victims scattered over a large area. All are unsolved cold cases of repeated strangulation to the point of death, followed by a reprieve, and then strangled again. As Arn continues his range detective work to find the rustler before the killer does, he realizes that Ana looks just like the strangler's other victims. Figuring out that Arn may discover his identity, the strangler begins to follow him. Why did the strangler kill so close to home when all his other victims were far away? What was different this time? Arn is following the killer's trail and the killer is following him! Who will win in this race against death and discovery?

This is another taut and well-written thriller in the A Bitter Wind series. The chapters go back and forth from Arn to the killer so that we can see both sides of the storyline. The characters are all well written and easy to identify with, including the killer's. The setting in Cheyenne's sheep country is well detailed and graphic. The murder is well plotted and gives us many clues and suspects to chose from. The storyline is twisted and turned to show us both the hunter and hunted's views. I really enjoyed this book, as well as the first one, Hunting The Five Point Killer. Mystery and thriller fans will all enjoy this book.
