Lemons to Lemonade…

The most tragic of events put Abby Sullivan at a crossroads. Turn left and sorrow would overwhelm her spiraling into a deep depression from which friends and family would find impossible to rescue her. Turn right and a desire to live would inspire her decision for a new start. Turn right! Abby moves from California to Maine purchasing a dilapidated old mansion overlooking the sea with plans to renovate and open a B&B. She has gained a new perspective settling in as a resident of Holiday Bay turning friends into a new family: Velma at the local café, Georgia hired to be the Inn’s manager, Lonny who is her lead in the renovations and his wife Lucy, and Rufus the cat. Although headaches arise from the issues pertaining to the renovations, she is enjoying the quiet life…well, until she stumbles of boxes, letters, messages, and mystery.

Letters in the Library earns 5/5 Mysteries…Engaging with a Capital “E”!

Once Abby made the decision to buy the mansion sight unseen, she ran into opposition, including legal, from her sister Annie. She had kept in email contact reporting on her experiences, renovations, and new friends, but with no response. As she reminisces on her late husband’s “would have been” thirty-fifth birthday she receives a short, but encouraging, text. Velma, too, has her own “sister” story having not seen or heard from Regina for thirty years after a conflict over…what else a guy. Reuniting sisters might be a great project since her writing has hit the proverbial “wall.” But letters, of a romantic nature, are found tucked behind the bookshelves. The postmark is 1948, but there are so many romantic links to the old house that Abby and Georgia are quite intrigued. And interest into the investigation of Karen Stinson’s death has renewed. Colt Wilder, chief of police/friend, indicates the evidence doesn't quite match the original verdict of “accidental,” and when one of Karen’s friends finds a box of mementos…coincidences become downright spooky! Abby just wanted the quite life running her B&B, but it seems “Holiday” Bay might need renaming…“Mystery” Bay?

Brilliant! So much to unpack in this second book in Kathi Daley’s The Inn at Holiday Bay series, and although it isn't necessary for newbies to have read the first book Boxes in the Basement, it makes for a complete experience reading how everyone was introduced. Once again Kathi has penned a page-turner with a handful of mysteries to interest any inner Sherlock including revisiting the tragic events that brought Abby to Maine. Her well-written, well-paced story is an engaging first-person narrative sharing Abby’s inner thoughts, fears, and feelings along with some vivid descriptions. She wove seemingly unrelated events into a “Wow!” of a read. Abby has found her inner strength opening up her heart to build close relationships, but her emotions are challenged when the death of her husband and son are linked to a cold case. Clever. Excellent. Engaging. Be prepared…although Kathi provides closure to some of the mysteries, others will continue into the next book, Messages in the Mantle, due out in April.

Along with an sneak peek into The Hathaway Sisters: Harper, first book in her newest series Family Ties Mystery set to release on February 26, Kathi provides an easy-to-follow recipe for Apple Pie Biscuits. Sounds like something Georgia would bake.

  6. Great review. This book seems different than many of Kathi 's other series. I like that Letters in the Attach delves into the past. This also seems deeper with more emotional issues. I haven't started this series but it is on my Kindle wishlist. I'm glad that most of Kathi' s are still on KU. I'm an avid reader and buy so many books it would be really expensive and KU saves me lots. I read usually sixteen or so books a month. Kathi, you amaze me that you write so fast You are one of my favorites. It's nice that this series seems to take a different story line.

  27. I like books with old mysteries. I'm such a fan of history that something about mysteries from the past intrigue me. Kathi Daley continues to show how versitle she is. Her series are all so unique. She also must write incredibly fast. Daley published more books a year than any author I know.
