Details on how to win an ebook copy of this book at the end of the review and a link to purchase it.

A Chicago Field Museum archivist, Irem Madigan is on vacation of sorts. She’s going to be best man for her gay brother’s wedding in Italy. It will be nice to visit with him, witness his marriage, and explore on her own.

What should be a relaxing visit starts badly after her purse is snatched. However, the thief didn’t count on an American who fights back. His arrest introduces Irem to a very nice policeman. In contrast, her brother’s intended should be nice, too, but there’s something a bit off about him. He’s gracious enough, even letting Irem visit the site his team is excavating. It’s very exciting—Rome is full of history and the dig is finding out more about ancient artifacts, one in particular. If true, it is priceless.

Beneath the city of Rome, it’s another world. It’s also a place where men do whatever it takes to get their hands on valuable objects, to satisfy their own greed. The relaxing vacation quickly turns into a dangerous proposition. Intrigue, mysterious men following, envelopes passed, deaths—will Irem be a victim of her own curiosity?

Rabe writes mysteries, thrillers, sci-fi, and fantasy, over three dozen in all. I can only hope Irem will be a recurring character because I want to know if she returns to Chicago and if the spark between her and the policeman ignites. Rich in historical detail without slowing the story, fast-paced action will carry readers from one chapter to the next, in “just one more page” fashion.
