Saved by An English Cottage Garden
Poppy Lancaster’s life in London with a dead end job, credit card debt, and limited romantic prospects leaves her discouraged, until a fateful letter arrives announcing an inheritance from a grandmother she knew little about. A lovely little cottage and a nursery business in the Oxfordshire countryside may not be a villa in France, but it belongs to her and despite only a “budding,” if not challenged, green thumb, she decides to stay. Of course, complications arise, beyond a need-some-repairs cottage and weeds that have taken up permanent residence, with a dead body planted among the unkempt flower bed. However, Poppy discovers she has a knack for being informally nosy, avoiding some perilous predicaments, and uncovering the truth. Her grandmother would have been so proud.

Silent Bud Deadly earns 5+/5 David Austin Roses…Engaging, Clever!

The job of bringing the garden nursery back to its former glory has been a challenge for Poppy with weeds everywhere, seedlings not thriving, and in the old shed an army of rats have taken up residence, but there is a silver lining. Her next door neighbor the handsome author Nick Forrest hears her “Rats!” scream and rushes over to see if she needs his assistance, closely followed by his two London friends who have just moved into a lovely house on the outskirts of the village. The young wife desperately hopes to create a proper country home with a proper country garden. Poppy is of the same mind and is offered the job. The money is eye-popping, the job will improve her image, but she worries about revealing she's not really a landscaper. But digging a few holes, popping in a few roses seems easy enough, until…the nosy neighbor, a “thorn” in the side of the couple, pops over with critical remarks, know-it-all suggestions, and…cough, cough, grab chest, dead. Not another dead body...this country living is quite the challenge!

H.Y. Hanna continues to hold the top spot as my favorite cozy author ever, and this series has “bloomed” into the Top Five of 2019. It ticks off all the boxes for an extraordinary read: clever murder mystery with a karmic stamp of approval; British setting preferably the countryside; admirable, but flawed main character; various suspects; “Oh my!” ending; a hint of romance. I am always engaged in H.Y. Hanna’s work! She doesn't keep it a secret for whom karma comes knocking, but the investigation always unfolds with several possible suspects, legitimate motives, and some perilous predicaments. Another thing I enjoy about this book is the fascinating information weaving through the mystery from which I learn something new: rose varieties, tips on gardening, and landscaping ideas. Marvelous!

Be a Big H.Y. Hanna Fan!
H.Y. Hanna is the author of my all-time favorite series the Oxford Tearoom Mystery. This nine-book with a prequel series comes in all versions: print, eBook, and audio. The stories are engaging and clever, the characters are well-developed, and a little treat is always included for you to bring the Tearoom into your home. She also authors my tied-for-first favorite. She takes the very entertaining five-book Bewitched by Chocolate series and adds a bit of magic to her mystery along with close friendships, possible romance, family secrets, and a centuries-old vampire who loves his fruit!

However, the audiobooks have a little something extra. They have the delightful voice artistry of narrator Pearl Hewitt who enriches the already engaging story with varied accents, dialects, emotions, and tone. I always say “murder is better with an English accent.”
