Karma Resides in Florida!
Transported to Melbourne Beach, a small community on the barrier island off the coast of Florida, readers are introduced to Elizabeth 'Liz’ Holt. After a tabloid scandal that figuratively and literally scarred her, she left New York and returned home accepting the role as assistant in her father’s law firm and at the family-owned Indialantic By the Sea Hotel and Emporium with her Great Aunt Amelia. Liz is also an author of some distinction and, in between her various responsibilities, has reenergized her “writing mojo" on a new book. For the past year, she has strengthened family ties, gained new friends, started a new relationship, and successfully put New York in the past. Oh, did I mention she's found she has a knack for solving murders? In Death By the Sea (2018), it's the death of a very annoying wealthy guest amidst the Spring Fling that wilts the festivities. In Killing By the Sea (2018), it's the body that washed up onto the beach that sets her on the trail during the first annual Pirates' Weekend. All entertaining. Clever. Fun.

Murder By the Sea earns 5/5 Manuscripts...Clever and Entertaining!
The New Year's Literary Masquerade Ball kicks off a week-long New Year's Writers' Festival with guest speakers and professional camaraderie. Guests at the ball are dressed as their favorite character enjoying great food, fun, and fireworks at midnight. Although costumes are heavy on nods to Lewis Carroll and J.R.R. Tolkien, Liz channels Jane Eyre, Aunt Amelia is the perfect Miss Havisham, and Ryan's Jean Valjean melts Liz's heart, but it's her ex-boyfriend Travis as a WWII soldier from his own failed novel accessorized with a bayoneted rifle and a threatening blackmail scheme that sends chills down Liz's spine....she'll regret her own angry retort. When Travis's literary agent and gossip link show their anger that Travis can't be found accusing Liz of having something to do with his disappearance, the new year rings in...murder! Liz is now a person of interest!

Kathleen Bridge got it deliciously right serving up a nice batch of well-deserved Karma. Although not my favorite perspective, I was surprisingly very engaged with the third-person narrative writing style. It was filled with vivid descriptions of the setting and characters, laid out the search, the clues, and the thoughts of the characters along with dialogue that illustrated well the various personalities from pleasant and friendly to snarky and downright mean. The murder victim was an obvious cathartic choice. And motive? A challenge to pick one sine the victim had burned a lot of people, and the final solution was a pleasant surprise! It took awhile for the axe to drop, but I enjoyed the journey: revisiting characters, showing a few dramatic interactions, and setting up additional conflicts. My favorite? Well, of course, I love Liz who's gaining confidence and personal strength and healing from her past difficulties, but she needs to trust in Ryan's attentions and be more forthcoming. I adore Aunt Amelia and all the 60s/70s references, but it's Betty's London Chimney Sweep Mystery book that fascinates me! I highly recommend Kathleen's third book...totally entertaining!

It is always exciting to see a cozy with my two favorite words. No, not Murderous Fun, although that's always good to see, no…Recipes Included! It's even more exciting when the recipes aren't random, but are actually connected to the characters in the story. In this third book, Kathleen has treated us to three mouthwatering Classic Desserts with a French Twist from the Chef Pierre Montague Cookbook: my favorite Crème Brûlée, decadent Chocolate Mousse, and fancy Crêpes Suzette. Yum!
