With a Little Help From My [Fur] Friends
Caitlin Hart, now West, owns the local cafe and bookshop, Coffee Cat Books, with partner/BFF Tara O’Brian. They offer treats, drinks, books, and a few “fur” friends to cuddle, but it’s Caitlin’s connection to the cats on Madrona Island that causes the closest scrutiny. She learned that when a cat, varying in bred, age, and temperament, arrives, there is a mystery, usually murder, needing to be solved. These intuitive cats make their presence known and meow, sometimes incessantly, to keep Caitlin on the correct track to uncover clues and answers. She doesn’t need to investigate on her own because she has her BFF Tara, her sister Siobhan, her two brothers/bar owners Aiden and Danny, brother-in-law/local deputy Ryan “Finn” Finnegan, husband Cody, and a whole town of friends. Her close friends and family know about the significance of the intuitive felines, but it doesn’t hurt for a bit of “two heads are better than one” teamwork.

A Whale of a Tail earns 5/5 Cold Case Conundrums...Engaging Page-Turner!

Coffee Cat Books is hosting the Tuesday night Mystery Lovers Book Club with acclaimed author Winifred Westminster as a guest speaker. Author of crime thrillers and traditional mysteries, Winnie is on a pre-publication tour about her new novel focusing on a fifteen-year-old cold case, a cold case residents of Madrona Island are sad to remember. She describes her first meeting, years ago, with the a very young Amy Anderson, fostering a relationship with her and her mother, and her deep sadness to learn Amy had been brutally murdered at a high-school homecoming after party. Winnie decided to do her own research and write a novel about the case, but the shocker is Winnie says she knows what happened...she knows who killed Amy. When deputy Finn, Cait’s brother-in-law, finds out Winnie professes to know the identity of the killer, he is very curious why she didn’t come to the police. He heads out to talk directly to Winnie about her evidence, but you guessed it, Winnie is dead!

Exciting Eighteen! I really enjoy the entanglements caused by reopening an unsolved murder case, especially when additional crimes occur to keep the secret from the public, and here Kathi Daley penned it well. She created an intriguing mystery with several possible suspects along with motives including the typical jealousies, secrets, and some not-so-typical teenage antics. Cait and her BFF both knew the victim, but were two years younger. Danny, Cait’s brother, and Cody knew her and provide some insights into the whereabouts and alibis of the suspects. The final reveal had some intriguing and thrilling twists I didn’t see coming, but it still turns out with some satisfying “justice for all.” Kathi’s signature well-written style includes vivid descriptions, holiday festivities (Halloween in July was fun), dialogue to illustrate tone and personalities, and lots of “fur” friends to enjoy, with the feline sidekick finding a forever home. This entertaining series is well-worth reading, and despite so much having happened over the eighteen books, newbies can start here and join in without being at a disadvantage...Don’t miss out!
