Following in the Family Footsteps...
All her life Lani Pope has dreamed of going into the family business...law enforcement. Her dad, Keanu Pope, is a retired homicide detective and her brothers are also police officers, however circumstances have not afforded her the opportunity to enter the police academy. In the interim, she’s been working as a water safety officer (lifeguard) at the Dolphin Bay Resort, and oddly enough, honing her investigative skills with every suspicious death she’s discovered...and there’s been quite a few. The last dead body led Lani and her dad to look more closely at the details of a cold case in which her dad had been the lead investigative officer, and in working and surviving the perils together, they both have gained more respect for each other’s expertise and abilities. It also showed her dad how truly bored he is in retirement, and how much more he feels he has to give. So he’s going back to work, not on the police force, but as a private investigator. And wanting to create more father/daughter time, he offers Lani a partnership. Pope Investigations begins...

Murder at Pope Investigations earns 5/5 Multiple Mayhem...Engaging Fun!

Lani and her dad seem to be doing well with their new business venture, but the dead body tucked inside the entryway doesn’t seem to be their ten o’clock client. This is the third body Lani has found, oddly all in places she would be sure to find them: behind her condo, next to her life guard tower, and now in front of Pope Investigations. There appears to be no connection between the victims or to Lani, but something’s definitely wrong. She turns down protective custody and takes on a missing husband case to occupy her thoughts...but interesting connections start to appear along with a bit of personal trouble...just another day in paradise!

Aloooha! Kathi Daley has put this eighth book in her Sand and Sea Hawaiian Mystery series into my Top Ten for 2019 with a clever, intriguing story: multiple murders, a missing husband, curious connections, and personal peril concluding with a clever ending. Using a first-person narrative from Lani’s perspective we enter her inner thoughts, ideas, fears, and feelings. Entertaining with vivid descriptions and dialogue that does well to illustrate the tone and personalities. Along with the story, the characters are the hit. Lani struggles with her personal life with questions about her relationship with Luke, her friends from the resort want her continued attention, and the mysterious Shredder reappears. Lani’s change of occupation gets her closer to the investigative work she hoped to make a career, and again she’s very good at it. The dynamic between Lani and her father is endearing and quite the change with the father’s continued realization his daughter is quite the capable detective. Kathi Daley once again offers an entertaining murder mystery, but it’s her characters and their connections that make her work popular.
