"The Beyond" By Chloe Neill: Review/Giveaway

by Terrance McArthur

Details at the end of this post on how to win a copy of this book and links to purchase it.

Here’s the concept of Chloe Neill’s Devil’s Isle novels—

The Veil between our reality and a paranormal world ripped, and monsters and beasts and mythic beings invaded Louisiana. After years of battle, the Veil was closed, and the paranormals left on our side of it were confined to a section of New Orleans. The magic that accompanied the attack gave powers to Sensitives, although too much magic turned them into dangerous creatures. Claire Connelly, a Sensitive, tried to hide her abilities until she met a bounty hunter of paras, Liam Quinn, who recognized what she was but tried to help her learn control. He received powers in an attack, and they joined to protect humanity when more paras were unleashed.

Now, we come to the fourth book, The Beyond, a series finale that answers questions raised in the other three: what’s it like on the other side of the Veil? When it seems like you can’t defend your world anymore, what do you do? Raise the stakes. Take the battle to the enemy. Find a weapon that might get their attention.

Malachi the angel leads the team through the Veil to the world of Elysium to get parts that can fight a band of weather-influencing Paras who are steering a hurricane that could destroy New Orleans for good. It’s a strange new place the adventurers encounter, a beautiful, serene land that is too serene for some.

This is the last book in the series, so there is more reflection on the journey in this one. Claire thinks a lot, and she weighs what’s right and what’s wrong. Her relationship with Liam gets deeper, but not graphic. Neill recently closed the Chicagoland Vampires series, but she has begun a second-generation saga, The Heirs of Chicagoland. In fact, there is a teaser chapter of Wild Hunger, the start of the Heirs series, tacked on to the end of The Beyond.

The climax is a mano-y-mano battle with help, and it sends us off with a tender curtain call. The Veil may be closing over Devil’s Isle, but Chloe Neill remains a powerhouse in the urban fantasy realm.

  1. Sounds like a fun series. Certainly winning the final installment would prompt me to get the first three. Thanks for the chance! crs(at)codedivasites(dot)com
