When not filling in as a waitress at her family’s Mexican restaurant, Lola Cruz proudly works as a private detective for Camacho and Associates. As much as Lola considers herself to be a Xena Warrior Princess-level warrior with stellar surveillance skills though, the twenty-nine year-old still shares a flat with her brother located just upstairs from their parents. Escaping the eagle eye of her very traditional and conservative mother is never easy, so her latest case is going to challenge all of her stealthy spy skills.

The Sacramento Police Department is hiring Manny Camacho’s firm to work undercover in the Broadway Salsa Club to determine whether they are operating an illegal sex trade business. The police don’t have enough evidence to conduct an official investigation, and Lola conveniently fits the profile as one of those most likely to be groomed into a possible prostitute.

As much as Lola’s mother is appalled by her daughter’s latest clothes-lacking assignment, that barely compares to the disapproval Lola faces from her boyfriend Jack Callaghan. The journalist whom she once stalked as a teenager is rightfully suspicious of her boss Manny, especially since he will also be in the club as they demonstrate their red-hot chemistry dancing the salsa. Relentlessly buoyant and determined to prove herself as an undercover agent, Lola faces down jealous co-workers, a lecherous bartender, and an extremely intimidating club owner. Family is also the first priority for Lola, though, which is why she also must come to the aid of her young cousin who may have gotten in over his head in an online chatroom, where a questionable FBI agent is soliciting acts of violence.
This fun and exuberant novel takes what could be a trope – plucky heroine torn between a mysterious, smoldering PI and his equally hot, but more conventionally employed rival – and instead adds twists and delightful surprises. Lola’s culture and family are always prominent in both her life and the novel, and Lola must delicately balance between expectations and her own desires. Jack and Manny each come with his own considerable baggage, but while sizzling chemistry definitely creates moments of confusion, Lola has mostly made up her mind on who is the “one.”
Scenes of steaming hot romantic moments are sprinkled throughout the novel, which nevertheless confronts very topical and timely crimes. The author of the Magical Dressmaking Mystery series, as well as the Bread Shop Mystery Series under the name Winnie Archer, can always be relied upon to deliver an exciting blend of hot romance, humor, and thrilling adventures. Throughout this series Lola has continued to gain confidence in both her professional and personal lives, and readers will enjoy seeing where her new sense of independence takes her.
