In Mayville Heights, Kathleen is delighted her brother, Ethan, is visiting. His band, The Flaming Gerbils, has a gig in town. Owen and Hercules, her cats, are happy about the visit, too. It’s more hands to share treats, and who couldn’t use more treats?

Kathleen, her friends, and the band go for drinks at a local bar, just to have a good time. When a drunken man kicks a veteran’s service dog, that’s just not allowed, causing a fight between the drunk and Derek, one of the band members. Lewis Wallace, the drunk, wanted to invest in Mayville Heights by bringing his business startup (organic supplements) to town. He was vague on the details of suppliers, distribution, and how many jobs it would create. His specialty was promoting himself as a great businessman.

When he’s found dead, Derek is a suspect because of the fight. On the other hand, Lewis didn’t have many, if any, fans, so the suspect pool is deeper than expected. Kathleen’s boyfriend, Marcus, is the detective in charge. The case proves to be frustrating with so many people, past and present, unhappy with Lewis.

On the home front, Ethan seems to be taken with Maggie, Kathleen’s good friend. Not sure how she feels about that, Kathleen is happy he’s home and just a bit amused to see him vying for Maggie’s attention.

Owen and Hercules are magical cats. Owen can disappear and reappear in the blink of an eye, letting him stow away to go to the library with Kathleen. Hercules walks through walls and doors, with just a shimmer to show where he went. Marcus has a cat from the same clowder, and Kathleen suspects she can disappear, too. Marcus is unaware. Will Marcus believe her or think she’s in need of psychiatric care? The closer she gets to Marcus, the more urgent the need to be honest.

This is book eleven in the popular series. Readers will be happy to see more of Ethan and his bandmates. As always, the cats are the stars of the book. Hercules has convinced Rebecca, their older neighbor, he cannot get his feet wet. After he visits, she takes him home, riding in a little wagon. He is not spoiled, of course.

Owen is still addicted to Fred the Funky Chicken who is filled with catnip. Hercules thinks he should have more control. Neither has any control where stinky sardine crackers are concerned. With help from the cats, friends, family, and neighbors, Kathleen is able to figure out who killed Lewis and why. Another delightful tail.
