October may be the season of Halloween festivities, but it also happens to be when Wiccans celebrate their Mabon “Thanksgiving” to the earth. Now that Keli Milanni has left her conservative Southern Illinois law firm to open her own private practice, she feels more secure as she recites a spell giving thanks to the Goddess of Nature. Still, her intuition is tingling as it warns of something ominous on the forefront, and it once again proves right when she acquires a new client.

Knowing that his former coworker has built something of a reputation successfully tracking down clues, heirlooms, and the occasional murderer, Crenshaw Davenport the Third wants to hire Keli as a consultant to help him locate a missing heir. Fifteen years ago a teenaged Lana Turnbull ran away from home, and the estate of the late Elaine Turnbull remains in flux with the absence of her granddaughter and sole heir. Elaine’s former caretaker and companion Ray Amberly asserts that Elaine had completed a holographic will to replace the current one, but neither witnesses nor evidence can be found. The case becomes more complicated when Elaine’s doctor reports that something is sketchy about her medications, with suspicion falling on one of the many staff and extended family members staying within the Edindale mansion.

When her boyfriend Wes Callahan is called away to Chicago for a journalism conference, Keli takes up Crenshaw’s offer to stay in the Turnbull home and assist in searching amidst the many books, artwork, and papers for clues to both Lana’s whereabouts and the possible new will. Advice from her Wiccan friends have Keli attempting to astral project her way closer to Elaine’s presence, but it is ultimately more practical efforts to track down alibis and witnesses that lead her closer to a satisfying conclusion. Disrupting her investigations are the continual pranks by a mysterious Giftster, who not only vandalizes her friends’ cars, he throws a rather hilarious wrench in Keli’s attempts to hire an assistant. Keli’s bestie Farrah Anderson is once again in the midst of breaking hearts and juggling suitors, leaving her more than happy to keep Keli company in what is becoming an increasingly dangerous mansion.

This is an enthralling examination of Wiccan practices that perfectly blends together with a classic locked-room mystery. The gothic tale of a wealthy matron, multiple wills, eccentric servants, shady groundskeeper, and numerous possible heirs will appeal to the fans of complex, Agatha Christie-like novels, but it is is made unique by the incorporation of spellwork and pagan rituals. Farrah delights in sparring with a stuffy and pretentious Crenshaw, and along with Wes and Keli, they are a delightful and grin-inducing investigative team. Celebrate the Autumn Equinox with this enjoyable mystery full of romance, witty banter, legal intrigue, and Wiccan spellcasting.
