"Mulberry Mischief" By Sharon Farrow: Review/Giveaway

by Sandra Murhpy

Details on how to win a copy of this book at the end of the review and links to purchase it.

Marlee Jacob runs the Berry Basket, your one-stop shop for all things berry, in Oriole Point. Piper, the town’s mover and shaker (and arm twister), has decided a fall or Halloween festival is too boring. She devised a Harvest Health Fair instead. Visitors can hear specialists speak on healthy diets, skin care, get screenings, and more. Surprising to some, it’s turned out to be a popular idea, partly due to volunteers wearing Halloween costumes so the spirit of the holiday isn’t totally lost.

Oriole Point has its own eccentric, nicknamed Leticia the Lake Lady. She’s easily spotted because of her orange (really orange) hair and her habit of staring out over the lake in the early mornings. She approaches Marlee with an odd request. She wants enough mulberries to cover her cottage. Mulberries are said to have protective powers. Some might think it’s a Halloween prank, but Leticia is deadly serious—she believes someone is trying to kill her.

When a stranger arrives in town, asking for Ellen Mulberry, Marlee suspects he might mean Leticia. She can honestly say, she knows no one of that name—and then leaves a phone message to warn Leticia.

The next day, the stranger is found dead on Leticia’s property, shot through the heart with an arrow made of mulberry wood. Leticia is nowhere to be found.

Marlee worries that most people will assume Leticia is guilty of murder, if for no other reason than she’s odd and a recluse. The more Marlee finds out about Leticia’s past, the clearer it becomes, Leticia was right to worry. Someone is out to kill her.

This is the fourth book in the series (Dying for Strawberries, Blackberry Burial, Killed on Blueberry Hill). Leticia is a haunted woman and with good reason. Marlee is willing to find out the truth for a woman she’s only spoken to twice. After all, who else will worry about the local nutcase? The mystery is a good one, intertwining the past with the present, contrasting the haves from the have-nots, and the powerful against the weak.

Information about berries is scattered throughout the story without distracting from the plot. At the back of the book find recipes for Mulberry Muffins, Martha’s Mulberry Pancakes, Halloween Bloody Cups (a berry version of peanut butter cups, using only three ingredients), and Strawberry Ghosts.
