Stella Reid has full custody of her seven grandchildren. Most of the time, they are enjoyable kids, but Marietta, she can get her drawers in a wad in a heartbeat. Savannah is the oldest and sometimes referee. It’s Halloween time, and the kids are excited about their costumes. There’s a corn maze on Judge Patterson’s property, but they’ve never been able to afford the tickets.

This year, Stella’s friend Elsie wangled free tickets for them. She’s cook for the Pattersons and claimed she needed some help to pull off drinks and snacks for the crowd. In exchange, she got eight tickets.

Of course, it’s easy to get turned around in a corn maze when zombies are jumping out, trying to eat your brains, and you’ve only got a flashlight to guide the way. Savannah and Waycross are the only two kids brave enough to encounter zombies, the other kids opting to hear a spooky story read by the town’s librarian instead.

When Stella realizes they’ve made a wrong turn somewhere, Savannah offers to climb a tree at the edge of the maze to see where they need to go. Unfortunately, she finds a long dead body before she even gets to climb. Stella hustles the kids back toward the sounds coming from the maze and calls the police from the judge’s office, ducking Elsie. It only took one look for Stella to know who was dead—and it was no natural death. It was murder.

This is book two in the spin-off of the Savannah Reid mysteries (24). Savannah gets her start in crime-solving here, at age twelve. For fans of Savannah and Dirk, it’s not what you’d expect, but it’s a real treat to see where it all began and a good mystery besides. Stella is no slouch in the investigation department either. Working with Sheriff Manny Gilford, she soon learns, for this killer, one victim wasn’t nearly enough.
