In Faith Hunter’s Shattered Bonds, Jane Yellowrock is a skinwalker, a shapechanger who shares her soul-home with a mountain lion she once killed. She was a vampire hunter. Now, she’s the Dark Queen of the vampires, and she’s dying. Using time-bubbling magic, she has developed a star-shaped cancer in her abdomen—she calls it Dudley. If it doesn’t kill her, someone is coming after her that might do the job.

Jane killed the son of Judas Iscariot who tried to raise his father from the dead by dark witchcraft, which created the first vampires. Now, the younger brother is out to get Jane and some of the powerful artifacts she has.

Because of her own problems, Jane hasn’t been in tight control of the vampire world. Now, her number-one assistant is kidnapped, her witch-family friends are attacked, and other-dimensional dragon-beings are threatening the timeline of history. It’s a chaotic world Jane inhabits.

She flies like a bird, she turns into a cougarized battle-beast, and she battles witch circles, a beetle-armored vampire who gets taken apart and puts himself back together (You gotta love those crawling body parts), and a wronged spirit seeking revenge for nearly two millennia. Besides the negative creatures, there’s an angel that keeps telling her he’s there to help her…while he’s making things more complicated.

Shattered Bonds takes readers deeper into the mind and soul of Jane Yellowrock than ever before. There are visions and invasions, sweat lodges and blood-sweat-and-tears. Here relationship with Bruiser, her semi-immortal love is poignant, her wit is mordant and biting, and the action is frenetic. All of Team Jane is there, but the focus is on Jane. Once more, change is in the air. When one arc ends, several others are sliding their parts of the story into place.

It’s intense, it’s complicated, and it doesn’t have time to stop and give you all the backstory. This is a series to be savored from the beginning, a dozen books ago. Nevertheless, Shattered Bonds is a rewarding whirlwind of a book.
