Fred Ainsworth owns 500 acres of prime farmland in Riverdell, North Carolina. He is selling it in small parcels to ten people who want to raise vegetables, animals, or crops. When his murdered body is discovered in Angelika's Eatery, a group of three women calling themselves The Cahoots work to solve the murder to keep the eatery's owner out of jail. The women are Penny, her friend Sammie, and Lily the lead detective on the case.

When their investigation finds out from his banker that Fred has spent all the money he had collected from sales to pay the back taxes, they also learn that he had sold his mineral rights to a giant oil fracking company. Knowing that the North Carolina legislature is voting on allowing fracking in the state, this is serious news to the small farmers in the area. With all the enemies that Fred's actions made him, how can The Cahoots sort out the person responsible for killing him? Can they find the murderer while the political element in town works to defeat the fracking bill? Can Fred's heir do something to help out the investors or is he going to ignore them?

This is a tightly woven story with realistic characters and a fantastic murder plot. The fracking aspect can be found in the daily news and is a real problem in today's world. The Cahoots are a fun mix of personalities. I really enjoyed how this story played out and who the murderer turned out to be. I highly recommend it for an enjoyable and fast read.
