Details on how to win a copy of this book at the end of the review and links to purchase it.

Surprising enough, even on a small island like Stella Maris, South Carolina, there are enough secrets and intrigue to keep the married private investigative team of Talbot and Andrews Investigations fully employed and juggling cases. Liz and Nate gain their latest client through an unusually labyrinth string of connections, with a Charleston Police Detective having his girlfriend mime hints that something is up with the murder of Trina Lynn Causby. A former native, Trina became a TV investigative reporter and was recently shot and murdered in Philadelphia Alley. From what Liz is able to decipher, the detectives are being pressured to make a quick arrest of Darius Baker, another former resident made famous by his food-travel show. It doesn’t take long for Liz and Nate to learn that Trina had been keeping a tremendous secret from her former high school boyfriend Darius, which resulted not only in a public argument but provides an ample motive for murder.

Being uncharacteristically discreet is Liz’s guardian spirit Colleen, an eternal teenager whose afterlife mission is to watch over and secure the future of Stella Maris. While Colleen declares that watching over Darius falls into her assigned duties, she rather infuriatingly refuses to disclose any more information on exactly why. This means that Liz and Nate will just have to rely on their outstandingly clever investigative tactics to discover the truth about Trina Lynn’s death. After identifying the safe house location of a witness, Liz and Nate infiltrate a Bed and Breakfast and use a mouth-watering eight-course wine pairing tasting menu to coax out the details from their fellow guests that point towards a set-up and frame-job. It’s a testament to Liz and Nate’s characters that they feel more than a little guilty about deceiving a genuinely sincere couple, but at least it is accompanied by a lot of alcohol and five-star cuisine. Through strategic planning and organization of suspects and motives, Liz and Nate must face down enraged ex-wives, sort out stalkers from ex-boyfriends, and dodge questionable law enforcement officers. This is also in addition to contending with Liz’s father, who, despite being inflicted with bronchitis, proves to be the most impatient patient and driving everyone over the edge with this antics.

This eighth in the series continues to deliver as many laughs as it does edge-of-the-seat moments of suspense. Colleen’s spectral appearances tease out clues instead of serving to manipulate or control the plot, tantalizing both readers and Liz on events to come. What makes this such a compelling series deserving its many fans has been progression and relatable struggles of Liz and Nate as a couple. Their maturity in dealing with their many differences, as well as their unity over family planning, will have readers envying their status and rooting for their success. Of course, the witty dialogue and banter are the highlight of the novel, naturally blending into the investigative exploits. The engaging Talbot family, Lowcountry cuisine, and exhilarating Charleston setting make this a delightful adventure of intrigue in a charming island town.
