“I See Dead People...Still”
For two years, Amanda Parker, under the alias Alison Prescott, was in the federal witness protection program after witnessing a mob murder that left her best friend dead. At the time she was a teenager attending high school, so her mother was allowed to accompany her, settling incognito in Cutter’s Cove, Oregon. However, soon after her arrival, Amanda/Alison makes a disturbing discovery; she can see and communicate with ghosts, a gift of which her new friends become aware and often are conscripted as back-up in her attempts to crossover the ghosts and bring justice to the living. Luckily, the danger ended and Amanda and her mother were able to return home to New York. However, ten years later, terrible nightmares send Amanda back to Cutter’s Cove where her gift re-emerges, her teenaged alter ego appears, and deciding to take up residence in Cutter’s Cove again, life is still filled with ghosts, mysteries, and more than a few hints of danger. But, she’s back with her friends, joined by her mother, supported by local police, and cuddled by two dogs and a ghost cat named Shadow.

Thanksgiving by the Sea earns 5/5 Double Troubles...Positively Engaging!
“You know what they say about the best-laid plans?”

Trinity Rosewood was attacked...shot, and now in a coma, the doctors aren’t sure she’ll ever recover. Her sister Carmen is distraught and clueless why this even happened, but on the encouragement of Officer Baker, she agrees to allow Amanda a visit, to see if, with her unique gifts, she can sense anything from Trinity that might help identify the shooter. However, seeing the dead doesn’t translate effectively to people in a coma. Although that’s a good thing since it may indicate Trinity is still hanging on to life. But, oddly, Amanda later has what could be described as a premonition; the mental flash appears to be a man being shot, a man she learns is Bryce Teller, a lawyer specializing in family law, although alive and well. Connection? Trinity is a social worker, and Bryce is a lawyer; together they were currently worked on three open cases. All emotionally difficult. All potentially volatile. All possible motives. Then... “There has been a shooting at the courthouse. A man is dead. All units in the area have been dispatched to respond.” Bryce Teller is dead, shot...just like Amanda had envisioned.

That’s just the first chapter! From that point on Kathi Daley doesn’t let up with an intriguing double mystery painted with an entertaining ghostly brush. Using a first-person narrative to share Amanda’s inner thoughts, fears, and challenges, her “I see dead people” ability is incorporated as a legitimate method of investigating, successful and quietly supported by the police, but not a hocus-pocus trick. Although the ghosts for “Thanksgiving” are less of a main character, not appearing on cue or having needed answers, but the premise along with Kathi Daley’s writing style, descriptive language, and realistic dialogue makes for a very entertaining page-turner. Along with a murder mystery unfolding this way, then that, with clues, suspects, and motives coming and going all the way to the final “Wow, I know what happened,” there’s a cold case to review, a woman in a coma to revive, a stranger, threats, and ghosts, obvious or not, being sought, the story includes Amanda’s budding romantics with long-time friend, a group of foster care kids, a Thanksgiving feast, and talk of the sooner-than-you-think Christmas planning. All in all a fun series, a prequel series not to overlook, and this book is a personal favorite!

Newbies...There are references, no real spoilers, to past events and experiences, ghosts and mysteries from this Haunting by the Sea series, but there are also references to the time the characters were in high school in the seven-book Seacliff High Mystery Series available on Amazon. I highly recommend enriching your journey by reading the first series. Despite the group being high schoolers, their maturity and intelligence balance their youth well. The ghosts and mysteries are engaging, and well worth reading!
