Coffee, Books, and More...Murder!
Jill Gardner, once a big-city lawyer, now living in South Cove, California, owns Coffee, Books and More, a place where people can gather for a cup of coffee, read a book, join a book club, or attend a special event. Friends, like Amy Newman, Sadie Michaels, and Deek Hill, are always about for support, whether in the coffeehouse or with a murder investigation. Amy, Jill’s BFF, is the city planner and a bride-in-the-making; wedding plans are foremost on her mind. Sadie owns Pies on the Fly and supplies the coffeehouse treats. Derek, the new barista, sees auras allowing him to read people, and his mom Esmeralda just might be clairvoyant. Her love life with the local detective, Greg King, is sparking nicely, too, but there is an annoying ex-wife and questions about whether he might challenge the mayor in the next election. And then there’s Emma her lovely “fur” friend and companion. But she worries about her dear Aunt Jackie Ekroth, who is her best support helping out at the coffeehouse. She’s been distant, snippy, and struggling lately after having called off her engagement to Harrold Snider. She hasn’t explained what happened, even Harrold doesn’t know what he did to precipitate the breakup, and when asked, Aunt Jackie says, “He didn’t do anything and this is none of [Jill’s] business.” Something is definitely not right, but Jill never thought it would also be unbelievable.

Jill is also the city council liaison for the local business community charged with developing the agenda, arranging guest speakers, and hosting the monthly business to business meetings at her cosy coffeehouse. This month’s guest speaker is Paula Woods from the Senior Project; her topic: elder abuse. Although she’s not the best public speaker, she is quite passionate about helping seniors who’ve become targets of scammer, frauds, or abusers. She herself had a grandmother who was a victim of a scam, so it’s personal. Jill found Paula a very nice woman, but her boyfriend, Ben Penn, who also volunteers at the Senior Project, seems too aloof and inattentive of Paula’s needs. So, when he ends up dead, Jill uncovers two sides to their relationship: one loving? the other not so much?

Memories and Murder earns 5/5 Cups and Treats...Engaging Entertainment!
Excellent! I am a recent convert to Lynn Cahoon’s Tourist Trap series and holiday novellas, and this one may be my favorite. As a newly christened senior citizen, I can’t count how many phone calls I’ve received with too-good-to-be-true offers or “call us immediately” threats, so this story addresses very contemporary themes keeping me engaged and hoping for a little vicarious karma. Lynn Cahoon’s writing style is very entertaining with descriptive language that brings to life the small town setting and a variety of characters along with dialogue that illustrates well the tone, emotions, and personalities. The story was very engaging with the right amount of personal peril, but it’s the characters that drive the story for me. I enjoy Jill Gardner, her reasoning and responses are realistic. She also collaborates with, not circumvents, law enforcement, which comes in handy when Jill and Aunt Jackie get into peril. All in all a great book and emphasizing the scams seniors can be faced creates a chilling tale!

Bonus! At the end, Lynn recounts her experience at a cooking class held at a local grocery store, but the cookie recipe she received garnered “so-so” responses...too much flour? She tweeked it to get “the perfect cookie” for readers to enjoy. Try her recipe for Easy Almond Cookies for you holiday cookie exchange.
