Ex-Spy to Scout Leader!

Merry Wrath never dreamed her skills as a trained CIA operative would translate well as a leader of a Girl Scout Troop, but they have. She has also become a strong female role model for a bunch of “enthusiastic” fourth-graders who themselves seem more intent on honing spy skills and “world domination” then earning badges and selling cookies. Her undercover career had been sabotaged making it imperative she keep a low profile back in her hometown of Who’s There, Iowa. But, it seems she’s too often been plagued with a few arms dealers, international terrorists, and a professional nemesis making her life and those around her a bit dangerous. Along with a few spies in training, her support system is quite eclectic with her now husband/detective Rex Ferguson, BFF/Assistant Scout leader Kelly Albers, Philby the cat...a cat she describes as looking like Hitler, and twin sisters-in-law taxidermists whose personalities are polar opposites.

Maltese Vulture Murder earns 5/5 King Vultures...Absolutely Entertaining!
In-laws can be odd, weird even, but Merry’s sisters-in-law may just be the gold standard. Twins Randi (loving) and Ronni (evil), Rex’s older siblings, are artists of a special genre. They own the Ferguson Taxidermy “Where Your Pet Lives On Forever!” and taking their unique artistry, and a few dead creatures, they have created inspired dioramas: warthogs playing shuffleboard, Battle of Gettysburg all in snakes, and Game of Thrones depicted with lemurs. Odd, at the least! But, the two are family. They are somewhat disappointed that one of their very first projects from a decade or more before has been returned: a King Vulture in all its swooping glory. Merry, and her troop, too, have a personal affinity for the real-life King Vulture on loan to the local zoo from the Smithsonian (It actually saved her life!), so she’s eager to see this particular work of art...Wow! Nellie Lou has found a new home, and Philby’s not happy about that! But, it’s the break-ins, thefts, strange Mr. Sun and Mr. Moon, possible hallucinations, the troop devising a plan to find a mate for their Mr. Fancy Pants, and another dead body that turns up this drama...way up!

Brilliant! I am such a fan of Leslie Langtry and her Merry Wrath series, as she also made my “You’re the Top! Best of 2019 Favorite Author! The world of Merry Wrath is filled with wonderful characters from admirable and talented to quirky, devious, and up to no good. The predicaments, often perilous, include theft, mayhem, kidnapping, blackmail, missing persons, and murder. Like a roller coaster ride with twist and turns...your head is spinning throughout, but in the end you want to repeat the whole experience. Suspects are plenty, but many seem to be more local this time than the international gangs often out for Merry’s head. The Girl Scouts seem better suited to this particular investigation, and one needs to suspend disbelief since no parent would really want their child learning effective stalking techniques. It’s just plain fun! I am greatly entertained by Langtry’s writing style that is full of descriptive language, dialogue that does well to illustrate personalities, nail-biting peril, and an often snarky humor I have grown to totally enjoy. I highly recommend this series!
